The Infamous Mushroom Burial Suit

Instagram lit up when the late actor Luke Perry’s daughter posted about her father’s unconventional burial choice. News outlets around the globe covered the now infamous “mushroom burial suit.” Here is what @lemonperry said on Instagram about her dad’s ecologically-friendly end-of-life decision:

“In December I went to San Francisco with two of my best friends. One of them, had never never been to California, so we went to show him the Redwoods. I took this picture while we were there, because i thought, ‘damn, those mushrooms are beautiful. Now, mushrooms hold an entirely new meaning for me. Any explanation i give will not do justice to the genius that is the mushroom burial suit, but it is essentially an eco friendly burial option via mushrooms. All i can say is that you should all look into them at coeio.com or just by googling “mushroom burial suit. My dad discovered it, and was more excited by this than I have ever seen him. He was buried in this suit, one of his final wishes. They are truly a beautiful thing for this beautiful planet, and I want to share it with all of you.”

So What is a Mushroom Burial Suit?

Eco-Friendly BurialA company called Coeio fashioned the garment. With a retail price of $1,500, available in either black or natural, the breakthrough eco-friendly, green overcoat is actually called The Infinity Burial Suit. According to the manufacturer’s website, benefits include:

  • Cleansing the body and soil (sic) of toxins that would otherwise seep into the environment
  • Delivers nutrients from the body to surrounding plant roots efficiently
  • Restarts life around the body faster than normal.

Pets Shroom Too

The company also offers eco-friendly pet burial options, including the Forever Spot Pet Shroud, which costs between $75 for small animals such as hamsters and fish, $150 for small dogs; cats and rabbits, $200 for medium dogs and $250 for large dogs. The company also offers pet pods, made from 100 organic cotton, which enable owners to bury their pet’s cremains under a tree, safely transforming their remains into nutrients to enrich soil. Another ecological choice for pet ash disposal is the Forever Spot Scattering Urn, made of 100% recycled cardboard. The company says the urn enables users to “minimize (their) environmental impact while scattering cremains in a special spot.”

Your Remains, Your Choice

Eco-friendly Burial OptionsDoes the thought of donating your body to feed the earth freak you out? Don’t worry; you don’t have to be buried in a mushroom suit. But if the idea appeals to you, we can accommodate your request. After all; your decision about how your mortal remains will be managed after you die is entirely up to you. We support whatever avenue you choose. Since it’s 2019, the options are virtually endless. But we celebrate any method that helps preserve the environment.
