Formal Funerals

People are unique. Their personalities, interests and habits vary. But, until recently, if you  attended one funeral, you attended them all. Everyone wore black. The service was formal. Boring, stodgy music and messages created a ceremony that encouraged tears and disdained laughter.

Personality Plus

Thankfully, today, personalized memorials and receptions replace bleak funeral templates. And, if you ask us, this is good. Why should the life and legacy of someone who lived a long life and died of old age be remembered in the same way as a young child who valiantly struggled but ultimately lost her battle to cancer? A memorial should be as unique as the person and journey it celebrates.
At Foothill Funeral & Cremation, we understand this distinction. So, we encourage mourners to honor their loved ones any way they see fit. A great way to do this is with a theme. This could equate to something as simple as incorporating the deceased’s favorite color into floral and casket choice or as elaborate as an entire ceremony designed to mirror their favorite film.

Theme Funerals

Star Wars

In 2016, for example, a family threw their son a Star Wars’ themed funeral, with R2D2 and Stormtroopers in attendance. Friends decorated his coffin with images from the film and accompanied by a large wreath that read, “Jedi.”

BBQ

To honor their barbecue-loving loved one, a funeral reception in Texas featured live pigs and a BBQ sauce fountain for loved ones to dip ribs.

Biker

Loved ones embalmed the corpse of a fanatic motorbike enthusiast and positioned him on his motorcycle for this three-day wake.

Christmas

Showcased in TLC’s short-lived reality series Best Funeral Ever, the death of a man who loved the holiday season inspired a Christmas-themed funeral featuring dancing, reindeer, snow, and a coffin on a sleigh.

High Flying

A memorial service for a pilot, who had been killed, along with two others in a plane crash, was held in a hangar – set up between several planes, his Harley Davidson, and tables of photographs representing different segments of his life. The staff at Foothill Funeral & Cremation is happy to accommodate this type of situation, as they travel to the memorial site or offer the use of their new venue in Covina, which is a gothic-style chapel.
