Part 2 in a 2-Part Series

Last week, we began a two-part series about social media use and funerals. In it, we discussed the ways that Smartphones and apps have taken over otherwise normal peoples’ lives. People walk into fountains, trees, vans and buildings because they’ve morphed into Smartphone Zombies. And while many use their devices for texting, reading, and sometimes, even talking, most of us spend at least half of our smartphone time on social media. Why are we blogging about this when our field is funerals? Because social media has taken our industry by storm. In this final entry, we will discuss digital media and funerals we love.

Digital Tributes

FB and FuneralsMemorialized Facebook Accounts

When someone you are friends with on Facebook dies, it feels odd to see their name. But, at the same time, the connection can comfort you in your grief. For this reason, Facebook allows a designated family member or friend to convert their deceased loved one’s page to a memorial site. For this reason, it’s important to designate who should take over your digital legacy when you die. Otherwise, no one will be allowed to take over the account.

Online Support Groups

Grief Support GroupIn the Good Old Days, you had to leave your house to join a grief support group, unless you hosted one at your own home. Today, you need only head over to your computer or pick up your cellphone to find hundreds of available online avenues for sharing your memories, pain, hints for grief recovery and more. In fact, there are lots of great grief support apps!

Newfangled Phone TreeSocial Media Funerals

Another habit people used to employ is the phone tree. When someone in your circle of friends or one of your family members died, you heard about it when a mutual friend of connected relative called. Thanks to the digitization of grief, you can now contact a slew of friends, family members and acquaintances to inform them about the death as well as related services with the touch of a button.

Whether you choose to contact interested parties by text, email, Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, spreading the word takes a lot less time than it used to. On the other hand, this also alerts people who you may not otherwise have informed. So, be careful how public you make the information if privacy is a concern. What’s more, if you want to keep the service small, make sure you tell invitees to keep a lid on the information. They also have access to the same social media channels as you and could inadvertently alert the world when you aren’t quite ready to go there just yet.
