Queen Elizabeth’s Death & Funeral
On September 8, 2022, Queen Elizabeth died peacefully at home at the age of 96. Family and friends surrounded her. The queen was the longest reigning monarch in British history, assuming the throne following her father’s death in 1952. Queen Elizabeth’s death affects millions of people around the world.
British Royalty Death Tradition
An official proclamation written on vellum and signed by 26 members of the Privy Council announced Queen Elizabeth’s death. They all have various titles like the Lord Privy Seal or the Archbishop of Canterbury. Furthermore, the government posted an announcement of her death on a fixed board on an easel outside of Buckingham Palace.
After the queen’s death the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries observed 12 official days of mourning. The mourning period began with a day of national mourning when television programming altered to acknowledge her passing and series programs replaced with documentaries about her life.
Following the funeral, the Royal Standard flag at Buckingham Palace will be replaced with a version featuring gold fringe. Later, that version will be replaced by a black version that has been made in advance and sits in storage.
Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral
Filmed and broadcast across worldwide, the queen’s state funeral took place on September 19th. World leaders attended the ceremony, including President Joe Biden’s wife, Dr. Jill Biden, whom some criticized for her choice of head ware. Following the ceremony, a traditional processional passed from Westminster Abbey to King’s Memorial Chapel in Windsor.
During the Service:
- The Prime Minister and the Secretary General of the Commonwealth read Lessons.
- The Archbishop of York, the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and the Free Churches Moderator said Prayers.
- To mark the end of the service, The Last Post sounded.
- Two minutes of silence were observed in the Abbey, and throughout the United Kingdom.
- The National Anthem drew the Service to a close.
Queen Elizabeth’s Burial
The King’s Guard saluted the Coffin as it passed the Queen Victoria Memorial. Once the coffin reached Wellington Arch, it was placed in the State Hearse. The parade gave a Royal Salute and the National Anthem played as the State Hearse began its journey to Windsor. Following a private memorial service attended by King Charles, the queen’s successor, along with her close family and friends, Elizabeth was buried with her late husband, Prince Philip.
