National Funeral Director & Mortician Recognition Day
Did you know March 11 was National Funeral Director & Mortician Recognition Day? If not, do you feel bad you didn’t buy donuts or cake or candy or your local funeral director? Just kidding. Although we aren’t joking about liking sweets. I mean, who doesn’t love sugar? We need it, in fact, to stay awake almost around-the-clock to be available for our funeral families. But most of you probably let March 11 come and go without giving your local mortuary much of a thought. That’s okay. We thought about you. We always do. In fact, that’s pretty much the official/unofficial motto for our profession:
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
More than a 1-Day Job
If you haven’t worked alongside a mortician to plan funeral services for a loved one who has passed, you probably don’t know how much time we spend before, during and after memorial services. We make ourselves available not just the day of the service but long before anyone shows up to marvel at the body or cry over the casket. In fact, we work hard for every family from the minute they email or text or call to say that someone they love has died.
We swing into action and don’t stop until long after the final mourner leaves the building. In fact, we manage death-related matters before, during and after the service, managing and securing legal documents such as death certificates, for the family’s convenience. We also offer an annual holiday remembrance service for all of our families. We also actively attend community events to comfort people in the community if they are touched by loss.
We’ve Seen It All
Although you may not be aware of the level of creative thinking that comes into our process, rest assured the bar is high. In fact, a mortician who fails to listen and creatively come up with solutions on the fly won’t make it in the industry. Whether we are figuring out how to get someone’s remains to cooperate in the embalming room or helping families seat members who refuse to sit next to each other, we’ve seen it all. So, you probably won’t be able to shock us even if you tried. We strive to find ways to think outside the box.
