FFC Infant Mortality Month Every 2 hours and 37 minutes, a baby in the United States dies before his or her 1st birthday. What’s more, about 3,700 infants die in the first year of life every year. The 5-year average for 2014–2018 was 39 infants per 100,000 live births. September is National Infant Mortality Awareness Month. In observance of that event, we wanted to examine this sad and serious subject. If you, or someone you love, has lost an infant, please accept our sincere condolences. Processing grief for infants is a delicate matter. When that infant dies from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), the associated shock can compound that grief.

According to the Mayo Clinic, SIDS is the unexplained death, usually during sleep, of a seemingly healthy baby less than a year old. SIDS is sometimes known as crib death because the infants often die in their cribs. Although the cause remains unknown, SIDS might be associated with defects in the portion of an infant’s brain which controls breathing and arousal from sleep. Researchers have discovered some factors that might put babies at extra risk. They’ve also identified measures you can take to help protect your child from SIDS. Perhaps the most important is placing your baby on his or her back to sleep.
