How to Not Get Dead this 4th of July
It’s been a rough year at the funeral home. Although we always encounter death, we rarely face the variety of causes and age-breadths that have crossed the FFC threshold. From horrific accidents to unexpected illness, 2019 is a banner year so far (not in a good way). So, as our 4thof July gift to you, here are a few tips for keeping yourself out of harm’s way. Although we can’t guarantee you’ll make it (no one has that assurance!), taking the following precautions should get you out of the Grim Reaper’s line-of-sight:
How to Be Safe This 4thof July
-
Don’t Play with Matches.
Whether you live in a city that allows “legal” fireworks or not, please don’t set them off. Instead, enjoy a safe and sane and far-more-impressive professional fireworks show. If you live in the LA Basin or the San Gabriel Valley, here are our favorites:
- Baldwin Park – Sierra Vista High School 4thof July Spectacular
- Claremont – Pomona College Fireworks Show & Concert
- Dodgers Stadium – Post-Game Holiday Fireworks
- Downtown LA – Grand Park Block Party
- Exposition Park – LA Memorial Coliseum
- Hollywood – Hollywood Bowl Fireworks Spectacular
- La Verne – Bonita High School 4thof July Events
- Long Beach – Queen Mary’s All American 4thof July
- Monrovia – Library Park 4thof July Fireworks Show
- Pasadena Rose Bowl – 93rdAnnual Americafest
- Pomona Fairplex – Kaboom! 4thof July Fireworks Spectacular
- Whittier – York Field 4thof July Fireworks Spectacular
-
2. Be careful with alcohol.
Drinking and driving, or drinking and boating, or drinking and doing many things besides just drinking, don’t mix! July is the deadliest month for vehicular deaths. More people die in drunk driving crashes in July than any other month, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).So, buck that trend by refusing to mix inebriation with celebration (unless, of course, you have a designated driver!)
-
Observe food safety rules
Even if you decide to fall off the diet wagon in honor of Independence Day, don’t throw caution to the wind where food is concerned. If the potato salad sits out for more than three hours, avoid it like the plague. When someone offers you a taste of raw fish, politely decline. Even good food can go bad. Even if you survive a mishap, you could spend an uncomfortable weekend in the restroom if you fail to exercise common sense.
-
Relax on the road.
Even if you pledge to remain distraction-free relative to drugs, alcohol and texting on the road, you could be involved in an automobile accident. Drive even more defensively over the busy holiday travel weekend than you normally would. Doing so might add a few extra minutes to your commute. But, take it from an undertaker, it’s better to arrive alive.
-
Wear your floaties.
The National Safety Council estimates that nearly 400 people will die over this weekend and 42,000 will be injured. Many of these will perish after swimming-related incidents. Do your part to minimize the death and injury count. Watch children near water. And, if you don’t know how to swim, be careful walking near water sources.
