In 2022, we lost some incredible people. They were scientists and artists, actors, and athletes. One, which we covered in a previous post, was Queen Elizabeth. Here are just a few of celebrity deaths in 2022:
Actress Kirstie Alley: Among the Recent Celebrity Deaths
Her death came as a surprise to many, although Alley suffered for months with colon cancer before she passed this year at age 71. Best known for her role on Cheers, she acted in a total of 228 movies and television shows during her career.
Celebrity Deaths: Dancer & DJ tWitch
Made famous by his appearance as a contestant and judge on the television show, So You Think You can Dance, Stephen Boss, aka tWitch, committed suicide on December 13, 2022. The 40-year-old was married with two kids. He left the family home and checked into a hotel before ending his life.
Sesame Street Actor Bob McGrath
One of the founding cast member’s on the long-running children’s television show, McGrath was 90 when he died in 2022.
Irene Cara is Among Notable Celebrity Deaths
Known most notably for her appearance as Coco on Fame, Cara died at the age of 63. She was a successful actress and dancer, who also appeared on the Electric Company as well as Flashdance. Her cause of death is unknown.
James Caan
Although he appeared in 315 titles over the course of his career, Caan may be best known for his role as Sonny on The Godfather. Younger audiences know him as the grumpy father, Ray Hobbs, in the hit Christmas movie, Elf. He died from coronary artery disease.
Meatloaf
Loved by millions for his “Bat Out of Hell” album and for such theatrical, dark-hearted anthems as “Paradise By the Dashboard Light,” “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad,” and “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That),” Meatloaf died Jan. 20 at 74 years old.
Madeleine Albright
The first female U. S. Secretary of State, Albright served under President Clinton. She died at the age of 84.
Gilbert Gottfried
A comedian, Gottfried passed away on April 12 at the age of 67. With a distinctive voice and crude sense of humor, his cause of death was Ventricular Tachycardia.
Actor Jethro Paz
Actor Jethro Paz, best known for his role in the movie “Asteroid,” died at age 78 on February 28, 2022. Born on January 20, 1944, Jethro Paz had a long career as an actor and writer.
Olympic Skier Freya Arndt: Notable Among Celebrity Deaths
Freya Arndt was a world champion and Olympic skier from Australia. She died in 2022 when she and her family were skiing on Mt Buller in Victoria, Australia. Freya was born in 1990, so she would have been 32 years old at the time of her death.
Physicist Marsha Vassil
Marsha Vassil was born in the United States and studied at the University of California, Berkeley. She worked at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2032.
Author Bertha Dingeldey
Bertha Dingeldey was an author who wrote a series of books about the lives of famous people of the past. She died in 2022 at the age of 47. She was survived by her husband and two children, one of whom is also an author.
Celebrity Deaths Included Artist Greta Sauer
Celebrity deaths this year included Greta Sauer, who was a famous Austrian. She died in 2022. She painted portraits of dogs, and her work is now on display at the Vienna Kunsthaus museum. Born in Austria, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna before moving to Paris, where she lived for a time before returning to Vienna.
Scientist Sophia Bloch
Sophia Bloch-Zender was a physicist who made several important discoveries in quantum physics. She was born in Germany and spent much of her life there but moved to the US for graduate school. There she discovered the Bloch-Zender effect, which describes how electrons can get “stuck” at certain points on an atom’s surface. This discovery has been crucial to our understanding of both atoms and their behavior in semiconductors like silicon.
