Funeral Talk

Is it time for “The Talk?”

We hate to break it to you, but it is probably time you had “the talk.” Relax; we aren’t talking about the awkward discussion you will one day muddle through with your children about the birds and the bees. The talk we are referencing is the one you should have with loved ones wherein you discuss your last wishes.

The Talk of a Lifetime

Although you may initially meet with resistance when you try to broach the subject, it’s worth pushing past the awkwardness, for your family and friends’ sakes as well as your own. The Funeral & Memorial Information Council offers helpful suggestions for initiating the discussion, including a free downloadable e-book. Their campaign, The Talk of a Lifetime, is designed to inspire open discussion about death because it is a natural part of life:Funeral Plan Talk

“Sharing stories with those who matter most isn’t just important today; it will be especially significant when it’s time to commemorate a life. Have the Talk of a Lifetime encourages families to have conversations about life and what matters most. These discussions can help families make important decisions about how they wish to remember and honor the lives of their loved ones.”

An open and honest conversation is the best way to communicate personal choices, which will inform the decisions your people make even as they will likely be in the throes of grief. Providing detailed instructions will ease their mind, helping them confidently move forward making choices.

How to bring it up:

Awkward funeral plan talk
There is no template for how to start the discussion, since everyone is unique and relationships differ. However, regardless of your family and friends’ personalities, it’s always best to be honest. If you are uncomfortable, admit your hesitation to start the discussion. Approaching the subject in a lighthearted yet serious tone should lesson mutual anxiety. Try to have fun! After all, your funeral is the final party you will ever plan. So, don’t miss the opportunity to make a statement. If you are more reserved, so tempted to ask loved ones to forego memorial or funeral services altogether, consider the importance of giving your family and friends a chance to say goodbye.
